Teaching
Hannah delights in working with students and helping them discover the joys of playing music. She believes in establishing a solid foundation in musicality, technique, posture and theory skills, to set students up for future success. Critical thinking, questions, repetition and demonstration are used to guide students in effective practice and ultimately, becoming their own best teacher. Each child presents their own strengths and abilities and lessons are tailored accordingly.
Hannah challenges her students, holding them to high standards, while encouraging them to build their confidence and love of music. Lessons should be engaging, inspiring and fun!
Hannah maintains a private piano and cello studio, and has years of experience teaching private and group lessons, as well as leading cello and string sectionals in El Sistema inspired nucleos in both Boston and New York City. She particularly passionate about her work with El Sistema and loves passing on her deep love of orchestra music to the next generation.
Lesson FAQS
What ages do you teach?
All Ages! My youngest student is four years old, most are in elementary and middle school, with some high school aged and older. If your child is able to (mostly!) sit still and concentrate for 20-30 minutes and is eager to learn, I’m eager to teach.
What is the format of lessons?
Lessons typically include warm ups, scales and pieces. Pieces are chosen by the teacher, the student or come from school orchestra assignments.
What about practicing?
It’s no secret that to get better at anything, you have to practice. However, when something becomes a chore, it’s no longer as fun. While I expect students to practice regularly, I prefer that they do a small amount of inspired, focused, effective practice, than lots of ineffectual, mindless repetition.
